Judging by the crowd I saw when I arrived Saturday night, the 25th Anniversary of Afrofest was a huge success. Woodbine Park isn’t exactly small, and it was absolutely saturated with people, not just sitting, but standing practically shoulder to shoulder with just enough room to wiggle to the music. I don’t think I ever really got over the shock of seeing that sheer number of people down the street from my house when it wasn’t Jazz Fest! I do LOVE living in the Beach, especially in the summer- never a dull moment! I know some of my neighbours find the madness a little overwhelming, but, especially as I am no longer waitressing or tending bar in the middle of it, I can’t help but love it. I wondered why Afrofest had been moved from it’s previous home in Queen’s Park, so when the founder, Michael Stohr, was kind enough to give me a couple of minutes he so clearly didn’t have, I asked him about the move and what he thought of the new venue. He admitted that the central location of Queen’s Park was ideal- can’t argue with that, and that it was a little more conducive to what he and his team were trying to accomplish. Also, as an older park, the trees are big enough to offer substantial shade. That made me wonder even more why they had changed locations. Apparently there were complaints and concerns from Neighbourhood Association(s) around Queen’s Park, so they didn’t have much of a choice. I have a feeling they would have faced similar problems in Kew Gardens, but Woodbine Park is a whole different story. Mr. Stohr seemed pleased to tell me that Beach residents were quite happy to have the festival in our new park, asking questions as they were setting up and looking forward to attending. We enjoy our nice big patch of greenery, and the shade will come with time. Like many of my neighbours, I look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries with the Afrofest family. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17th Annual Annex Festival Miles Nadal Jcc and Bloor Annex BIA present the 17th Annual Annex Festival on Bloor, Sunday, June 9, 2013,11AM to 6PM, extending from Spadina to Bathurst. The Danforth Music Fest/Beaches Blues Festival (not to be confused with the Waterfront Music Festival!!) is an example of a “charitable organization” to watch out for. The proof that the organization no longer qualifies to distribute tax receipts is a matter of public record, yet it is business as usual for Mr. Leroy St Germaine and his minions selling tickets with the promise of “a portion of the proceeds going to charity.” MORE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seth George Ramocan “This marks the 22nd year that the City of Toronto has official declared Bob Marley Day (which began with former Mayor Art Eggleton),” said Courtney Betty, Chairperson of the Bob Marley Day Committee. “ Bob Marley said One Love. So, each year we take time to honour the best of the best, people - acting in the diversity spirit of Bob Marley’s One Love,- who have worked hard to make our City a better place for all. As the diverse population continues its tremendous growth, it becomes even more critical that the doors of opportunities are open to all. “ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our Current Issue Is Here News Update: Bloor News Web Visitor

Bloor News Goes To The Movies“CELEBRATING TWENTY YEARS OF MADNESS” with Workman Arts at the 20TH ANNUAL RENDEZVOUS WITH MADNESS FILM FESTIVAL Despite increasingly widespread awareness and education, far too many people still believe much of the stigma attached to mental illness. It is frightening enough to people who don’t have to deal with it on a daily basis, and can be terrifying and confusing for actual sufferers and those closest to them. Countless individuals and families suffer in silence, associating mental illness with fear and shame, and one of the most important things we can do as a society is educate the public, and ensure victims of mental illness know they are not alone, that there is help available, and that there is no shame in seeking assistance. In some cases, it can be as simple as a daily dose of medication to alter brain chemicals that can make a difference, and save someone from a lifetime of fear, loneliness and ridicule. more movies toronto review ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Toronto Tax Code Makes Retail Stores Vacant - Sept 1/2012 According to Mike Layton, son of former NDP leader Jack Layton, the way the city’s tax codes are set out leaves little or no incentive for Landlord’s to fill their vacant properties quickly. When the city offers a 30% tax break to Landlords for property that remains vacant this becomes rather an incentive to hold out for tenants who can pay more rent. “With property values being what they are … you need to command the biggest rent, and that will end up being a restaurant,” Layton explains. “It’s good for our culinary culture, but it’s not good for the balance on the street.” Still, Layton has put a proposal before City Hall that would reward landlords for taking on less lucrative tenants, including community organizations, rather than letting properties lay fallow. “The property owner [would be] given a tax credit to house one of these organizations,” he explains. “Places that aren’t being rented can have one of these organizations in on a month to month lease, and if [the landlord] can find a full-paying tenant, they can move them in.” _______________________________________________________ The TD Toronto Jazz Festival from June 22 - July 1, 2012. However, Dufferin Park as we now know it may be in trouble because of trouble caused by a lack of accountability for the money being spent. In May the “Friends of Dufferin Park” organization received a notification from the internal auditor, who wished to enforce more accountability with the way money handling in the park was taking place. Currently duties such as the running of the Dufferin Park Farmers Market and skate rentals are handled by the Centre for Local Research into Public Space (CELOS) and volunteers. CELOS is a supposedly non-profit corporation run by unelected members. However, because of the structure of this group, city officials worry that there is no accountability for money with the CELOS. Earlier this year CELOS received a $100 000 Trillium grant to invest - more Queen of Sheba Traditional Ethiopian Cuisine IF WE CAN NOT STUFF YOUR FACE ENOUGH We hope you will find this truly different and exciting dinning experience, breaking the same bread and eating from the same plate has social significance in th Ethiopian culture. lt strengtheni the bonds of friendship and personal loyalfy. lt is said that people who eat from the same plate will never betray one another.
