Are you new to vinyl?

Sound Quality

The thickness and quality of the vinyl is imperative when it comes to a good quality vinyl lp. In the early 70’s, as a cost cutting move, much of the music industry began reducing both the thickness and the quality of record vinyl. Marketed by RCA Victor as the Dynaflex (125g) process, it was considered inferior by most collectors. Something to keep in mind when shopping for older recordings, but likely unavoidable in a lot of cases. Most vinyl records are pressed from a mixture of 70/30% virgin to recycled vinyl. New or “virgin” heavy/heavyweight (180-220g) vinyl is commonly used modern audiophile vinyl releases. Many collectors prefer heavyweight vinyl albums for their superior sound because of their higher tolerance against deformation from normal wear and tear.

Vinyl Record Care and Maintenance

Dust, oil and dirt not only takes away from the sound, playing a dirty vinyl LP actually damages the playing surface, so keeping your vinyl record collection clean is very important. Many commercial products contain isopropyl alcohol and shouldn’t- despite the nice shiny result, the alcohol actually strips the protective coating and leaves the vinyl LP vulnerable to damage and the sound brittle and grainy. Your best bet is a device specifically designed for cleaning- some are quite inexpensive, or a non-abrasive microfiber cloth in a pinch. Some people recommend dish soap, but the reviews on that vary, and rinsing with water is difficult without damaging the label. Handle them at the edges and make sure you center them before putting them on the turntable so they don’t get damaged. Aside from that, sit back and enjoy the tunes!

Understanding the new media

Understanding the new media

The smartphone has won the battle of most customer’s attention.  Recent studies show that the public is holding on to their phones for tasks that we formerly did on our desktops. Our e-mail, our google search, and far too many apps to keep us off of a TV show and/or a good read of the paper.

If the “smartphone has won the battle” in order to promote an event we need to be all over the phone.

Smartphone users dial up Google to find anything from an event to a cheese sandwich. Google represents 93% of the searches. So getting your event on the top of Google would do the trick. Bloor News is run by a site that features getting found on top of Google. So if you know SEO (search engine optimization) then you can out race or out place the local papers.  So with a good picture, knowledge of SEO, one guy with a camera can place an event on the first page of Google. Same picture can be found with hashtags on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Because, the second most popular place to find that event is Facebook.  So using the same knowledge of SEO we can place an event on all social media.

The next factor that controls success is the number of times an event or website is listed on Google. Google lists the mentions on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and web sites. So would you rather be list on 40 websites or 4 million. The more hits, the better chance of your info getting into the customers phone.

THE NUMBER OF FANS I HAVE IS UNIMPORTANT–  hashtags correctly with a “HOT PIC”  then it is
retweeted and or re-posted by a user with more fans. Because what they want is “media”. Give me a pic of Brad Pitt with correct hashtags and i will reach millions. And if i have 10,000 followers and your media is an old dead dog — your response rate will be lower

Let’s look at some samples of poor use of social media
THESE RESULTS ONLY WORK ON A DESKTOP

torontojazz.com – About 55,500 results (0.46 seconds)

cmw.net (Music Week) About 448,000 results (0.45 seconds)

Would you hire the promo rep who got only “55,000”  or would you rather have “448,000” Both events have been around for the same time period.

Number of time on Twitter #CMW is listed = About 7,390 results (0.56 seconds)
Number of time on Twitter #TorontoJazzFest is listed =About 3,030 results (0.56 seconds)

TorontoJazzFest is 50% LESS than CMW

TorontoJazzFest site:facebook.com About 1,010 results (0.58 seconds)

CMW site:facebook.com About 48,000 results (0.81 seconds)

This new media is not a secret . NY Times published a report ( Everybody’s a Critic. And That’s How It Should Be.) by their critic  A. O. SCOTT on JAN. 30, 2016 claiming that any person with an iphone can be a powerful as the NY TIMES.

Back in the 1980’s all you needed was the local paper to review and/or promote your event. The promo person job was to get the press out to your event because the paper had the power to pack your event.  Guess what the power is with GOOGLE and it can be done with a good picture and knowledge of SEO

Art Battle at The Royal Winter Fair

Art Battle at The Royal Winter Fair

Do you like battles? How about an art battle? Watching 12 artists painting live in front of the crowd is more exciting that it may sound. Visitors of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair had the opportunity to see that for themselves on Nov. 10. Jieun Kim, a medical student of the University of Toronto, said it was her second time taking part in an art battle. As a self-taught artist, Jieun Kim just loves painting. “It feels really good because I do it for stress relief,” she commented. “It also helps me express all the feelings I have inside me.” She also wants to break the stereotype about boring doctors and might succeed. Being able to draw an actual picture in 20 minutes in front of dozens of people definitely does not sound as a boring pastime.

Going back to more typical kind of battles, the Horse Show is happening Nov. 10-14. Voted Top Ten Horse Shows in North America in 2014, its signature is the competition for International Show Jumpers. Longines FEI World Cup, one of the most attended events, according to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair official website, is a must-see event. Both competitions would be exciting for newbies as well as for long-time fans.

Toronto International LUXURY CHOCOLATE SHOW

Toronto International LUXURY CHOCOLATE SHOW

Joey Cee

Have you ever tried chocolate shawarma? Or chocolate sushi? Beef in chocolate sauce? Or maybe chocolate vodka? If you were among the visitors of the Toronto International LUXURY CHOCOLATE SHOW on Nov. 8, you most likely have. Local chocolatiers from Toronto, Oakville, Montreal and even Newfoundland as well as artisans from Hungary, Belgium and Mexico presented their creations. Everything from regular chocolate bars, biscuits and cakes to cars and shoes made of chocolate was there to entertain the attendees.

Two Friends Chocolates, a Markham-based company, brought their signature truffles and chocolate peanut butter to the show. Founded in 2012, the company is owned by, surprise, two friends. They claim their friendship is the foundation of the company, the glue holding them together. Having pursued an education in engineering, they once discovered chocolate making and decided to go for it. Three years later they have no regrets.

For those looking for a gift for THAT friend who is always difficult to surprise, why not break a couple rules? Forget the typical cheese&wine evening and try pairing your favourite wine with chocolate. Brix Chocolate for Wine gets your back there, offering carefully designed specialty chocolate bars and sets to go with any bottle of wine.
