The issue of Canada’s residential schools has been at the forefront of public discussion in recent years, particularly with the discovery of unmarked graves at former school sites. This revelation has ignited a nationwide conversation about the atrocities committed against Indigenous children in these institutions, sparking national sorrow, anger, and calls for reconciliation. However, the media coverage surrounding these discoveries has, in some cases, led to widespread misconceptions and confusion about the true nature of these schools and the historical narrative.
In this blog, we explore how media reporting on the unmarked graves—and the broader conversation about residential schools—has sometimes been misleading, and we delve into the reality of what happened, as well as why it’s critical to approach these topics with care and accuracy.
The Narrative: A Sudden Revelation of Mass Graves
The media frenzy around the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential school sites, most notably the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia, began in May 2021, when the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc First Nation announced that ground-penetrating radar had detected the remains of 215 children. The discovery was later followed by additional reports of unmarked graves at other residential school locations across Canada. This discovery was framed by much of the media as an eye-opening revelation that had suddenly come to light.
Headlines like “Mass Graves of Indigenous Children Found at Former Schools” spread across news outlets globally, with images of crosses and mournful vigils underscoring the gravity of the claims. While these discoveries were undoubtedly tragic and confirmed suspicions that many had long harbored about the residential school system, the rush to label them as “mass graves” led to an oversimplification of the facts.
The Rush to Judgment
The term “mass grave” connotes a deliberate attempt to conceal the bodies of a large number of people, often implying that the deaths were intentional, executed with the goal of erasing evidence of wrongdoing. While many Indigenous communities have long suspected that children died as a result of neglect, disease, and abuse at residential schools, labeling the graves as “mass graves” was, at best, premature and, at worst, misleading.
Several key facts are important to consider in this context:
Unmarked Graves Are Not “Mass Graves”: The graves in question are not necessarily mass graves in the typical sense of the term. Many of the graves are unmarked, which is not unusual in the historical context of the residential school system. Indigenous children who died in these schools were often buried in unmarked plots, and many of their families were not informed of their children’s deaths. In some cases, the bodies were buried without ceremony or any effort to acknowledge their humanity.
Context of Deaths: The children who died at these schools often succumbed to diseases like tuberculosis, influenza, and other ailments that were rampant in the unsanitary and overcrowded conditions of the institutions. While the deaths were tragic and often preventable, it is important to distinguish between children who died from neglect or illness and those who were killed intentionally. The trauma of these children’s deaths was compounded by the fact that families were often not notified, leaving them to mourn without closure.
Historical Oversight, Not Conspiracy: The absence of records, and the lack of proper documentation about these deaths, was not necessarily the result of a concerted effort to hide the bodies or erase evidence of a genocidal policy. Rather, it was the result of systemic neglect, cultural insensitivity, and the dehumanization of Indigenous children, which permeated the residential school system. This neglect in record-keeping and the lack of any proper memorialization further compounded the emotional damage caused by these schools.
How the Media Missed the Mark
The problem with the media’s coverage of these grave discoveries is not necessarily in their reporting of the findings, but in how the narrative has been shaped. Here are some of the issues with the media coverage:
Sensationalism Over Nuance: The term “mass graves” immediately conjures images of intentional and systematic genocide, and while Canada’s residential school system was deeply harmful and had elements of cultural genocide, not all deaths were the result of malice. By jumping to conclusions about the nature of these graves without fully understanding the causes of death or the conditions that led to them, the media has sometimes fueled more fear, confusion, and resentment than clarity.
Exaggerating the Discovery: While the discovery of unmarked graves is a tragedy, the media’s framing of this as a shocking “discovery” overlooked the fact that many Indigenous communities have been aware of these unmarked graves for decades. Stories of children dying in residential schools, being buried in unmarked graves, and having their families left in the dark have been passed down through generations. Indigenous leaders and elders had long been vocal about the systemic mistreatment of children in these institutions, and many survivors shared their painful experiences long before these unmarked graves were detected.
Lack of Historical Context: By failing to provide adequate context about the residential school system’s history, the media has inadvertently reinforced simplistic narratives. This leads to a lack of understanding about the full scope of the trauma that these schools inflicted. For example, the very concept of the “cultural genocide” perpetrated by the residential school system is often not sufficiently explored in the media, making it difficult for audiences to grasp the depth of the harm done to Indigenous communities.
The Truth About Residential Schools
Understanding the full truth about the residential schools requires more than just focusing on unmarked graves. While the discovery of these graves is undeniably important and painful, it must be part of a broader reckoning with Canada’s history.
Cultural Genocide: Residential schools were a tool of cultural genocide intended to assimilate Indigenous children into Western society, often by force. Children were subjected to harsh physical punishment, forbidden to speak their languages, and separated from their families for extended periods. Many were forced to adopt European customs, practices, and religions, which led to the erosion of Indigenous languages, cultures, and traditions.
Abuse and Neglect: Beyond the unmarked graves, the residential schools were sites of abuse, neglect, and trauma. Many survivors report being subjected to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and countless others were subjected to conditions of overcrowding and disease, where medical care was often insufficient. These schools were breeding grounds for intergenerational trauma, the effects of which continue to reverberate through Indigenous communities today.
The Legacy: The legacy of residential schools is one of ongoing displacement, loss, and suffering. While Canada’s government and churches have formally apologized, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission has documented many of the abuses, the social and psychological scars left by these schools remain present in the everyday lives of many Indigenous peoples. A meaningful path forward requires not just acknowledgment of the harm done, but a commitment to reparations, healing, and structural change.

For the next eight hours, Ezra Levant (Rebel News) will be on trial for writing a book called The Libranos.
There is an army of lawyers here from the Trudeau government. If they win, they will set a terrible precedent, making it illegal to publish books critical of politicians without first “registering” those books with the government.
Here’s a quick recap: In the 2019 Canadian election, there were 24 books published about Justin Trudeau.
23 of those books were pro-Trudeau or neutral. And then there was my book, “The Libranos: What the Media Won’t Tell You About Justin Trudeau’s Corruption”.
That enraged Trudeau — especially when it became a best seller. So Elections Canada assigned more than a dozen staff to investigate me and prosecute me. They’ve been hounding me for four years. They have already fined me thousands of dollars. And I’ve had to spend $100,000 in legal fees.
But I’ve appealed to the Federal Court. And today is the day that political freedom — and the right to criticize the government — lives or dies.
You might be thinking, “There’s no way books can be banned in Canada just for criticizing Trudeau. It sounds too crazy.”
Let me quote from an official notice I received from the “Manager of the Compliance Unit” of Elections Canada’s censorship branch:
the book title’s reference to “Librano$“, which was clearly designed to create an association between the name of a registered party and The Sopranos, a mafia-themed television show, and to link the party to corruption… drawings of the show’s characters were replaced with drawings of the leader and other public figures of the party.
Seriously. Trudeau’s staff are now deciding what words and even what pictures we can use to criticize Trudeau. He really meant it when he said China’s dictatorship is the country he most admires.
Speaking of which, Elections Canada hasn’t lifted a finger to stop Communist China from interfering in our elections. They’re too busy prosecuting my book.
You might recall that they specially hired two 30-year veterans of the RCMP to go after me — one of whom specialized in counter-terrorism.
Those senior cops interrogated me for an hour. I’ll never forget it: one of their most bizarre questions was to ask me why I didn’t register my book with the government before I published it. I secretly recorded that interrogation — you can watch it here if you haven’t seen it before.
Here’s their theory: they claim that because my book criticized Trudeau, it was campaign propaganda and had to be registered with the government. Even though Canada’s election laws specifically exempt books and the promotion of books. But Trudeau doesn’t care — he is trying to censor the Internet, so obviously he wouldn’t hesitate to censor an old-fashioned book.
I note that not a single journalism organization or civil liberties group has said a word to support me. Amnesty International, PEN Canada, the Canadian Association of Journalists, Canadian Journalists for Free Expression, and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association — not one of them has even issued a statement, let alone intervened in court. They don’t believe in freedom anymore — but I do.
A systematic review of 325 autopsies showing COVID-19 vaccination caused or significantly contributed to 74 percent of deaths was removed from The Lancet’s preprint SSRN server within 24 hours, adding to an increasing number of censored studies on the potential harms of COVID-19 vaccines.
The study, published July 5, examined all autopsies published in peer-reviewed literature to determine whether COVID-19 vaccination caused or contributed to the person’s death.
Researchers searched all published autopsy and necropsy reports related to COVID-19 vaccination through May 18, 2023, resulting in 678 studies. After implementing inclusion criteria, they chose 44 papers containing 325 autopsy cases and one necropsy case. A panel of three expert physicians independently reviewed each case to determine whether COVID-19 vaccination was a direct cause or significant factor in each death.
Of 325 autopsies reviewed, 240 deaths, or 74 percent, were independently adjudicated as “directly due to or significantly contributed to by COVID-19 vaccination.”
Findings showed the most affected organ system in COVID-19 vaccine-associated death was the cardiovascular system at 53 percent, followed by the hematological system at 17 percent, the respiratory system at 8 percent, and multiple organ systems at 7 percent. Three or more organ systems were affected in 21 cases. The mean time from vaccination to death was 14.3 days—with most deaths occurring within a week of the last vaccine dose.
Pastor Artur Pawlowski’s troubles with the Canadian authorities began long before his sermon to commercial truckers encouraging their peaceful defiance against what he thought were “oppressive” public health mandates for COVID-19.
In 2005, he began serving and ministering to downtown Calgary—Alberta’s poor and downtrodden. “In other words, feeding the homeless and praying for them, which is now illegal,” he described to The Epoch Times in a telephone interview while under house arrest in Calgary following his court conviction in May for inciting mischief and violating his release conditions.
The police eventually showed up at Mr. Pawlowski’s church, telling him he couldn’t feed the homeless by law. Neither was he allowed to assemble or preach in public.
Such actions are also illegal and punishable with tickets, fines, and even jail time.
He added that tensions with the authorities had reached the point where police showed up at his church weekly.
During the pandemic, he received 40 tickets for COVID-19 violations, including one for a Christmas celebration he said drew a response from over 100 police officers, 52 police vehicles, as well as anti-terrorism units.
Over 300 Citations Between 2005 and 2015, Mr. Pawlowski said he received over 300 citations for refusing to stop preaching, feeding the homeless, and doing what he thought was helpful to those in need.
He was arrested and charged in 2006 for reading the Bible in public, and considers being the first Canadian to receive a COVID-19 ticket for feeding the homeless a badge of honor in what he’d say was righteous defiance.
“I asked them a simple question: ‘What do you think will happen to the homeless if we kick them out of shelters and shut down soup kitchens?'” he said of his efforts.
On Aug. 9, Mr. Pawlowski, a native of Poland and an acolyte of the “Solidarity Movement,” could receive up to 10 years in prison for the charge of “inciting mischief” during Canada’s nationwide trucker protests last year.
The protests rose in response to the public health rules of Canada’s Trudeau administration, sparking a massive “Freedom Convoy” from like-minded residents that threatened to bring the nation’s economy to a halt unless COVID-19 restrictions that were also impacting the economy and mental health were lifted.
Response to Government Overreach As a Christian minister, Mr. Pawlowski said he believed he was waging a spiritual battle against “government overreach” during the pandemic, even if it means he has to pay fines, get arrested, or go to jail.
On Feb. 7, 2022, at the border crossing blockade in Coutts, Alberta, Mr. Pawlowski told a crowd of commercial truckers, “It’s about time for Canadians to rise up and start roaring.”
“For the first time in two years, you’ve got the power. They’ve got the guns, yes—it’s all useless when you all rise up. There is no tyrant big enough that can stop [the] masses.”
Canadian authorities arrested and charged him with inciting mischief and interfering with essential infrastructure under Alberta’s Critical Infrastructure Defense Act of 2020.
The Critical Infrastructure Defense Act “protects essential infrastructure from damage or interference caused by blockades or similar activities, which can cause significant public safety, social, economic and environmental consequences.”
“Of course, if you listened to my service, you will know that I said no guns, no swords, just stand for God and human rights during my sermon three times,” he said of the accusation.
Mr. Pawlowski said he spent 50 days in prison, mostly in solitary confinement surrounded by concrete cells, before he was placed in maximum security and a psychiatric ward without evaluation.
The court found him guilty of inciting mischief in May. Judge Gordon Krinke placed him under 12-hour daily house arrest until his sentencing date.
Months later, he is “still under house arrest in Calgary,” he said.
Belief on Trial “I am the first Canadian where my sermon and speech were on trial. Everything was about what I said. The lawyers argued what I meant. It was a charade, a show trial—a joke,” Mr. Pawlowski said.
“I was not allowed to say a word as they debated what I said and what I meant. They couldn’t agree on the wording.”
Mr. Pawlowski said he is also the first Canadian citizen charged with eco-terrorism in the history of Canada.
“And now, the judge ruled I am the first Canadian ever to be found guilty of inciting mischief and eco-terrorism,” Mr. Pawlowski said. “The Canadian courts are upside down. I am a political prisoner. It has nothing to do with law and order,” he expressed.
Mr. Pawlowski told The Epoch Times he had received offers of money and government positions in exchange for his silence, but he’s “not for sale.”
“I have seen this movie before” under communism in Poland, he said. “It does not end well.”

Although research has been allowed, off and on, over the past few decades, the freedom to truly discover the magic of this “weed” is growing, and with it, widespread use and appreciation. A B.C. high school teacher was escorted out of his classroom by two staff members after telling students the majority of residential school deaths were caused by illness.
“I was walked out like a criminal. They can’t walk a teacher out of school unless the teacher is a direct harm and immediate harm to children,” Jim McMurtry of Abbotsford, B.C., told The Epoch Times. “I wasn’t a harm to children because I made one comment that was historically true.”
That was in May, 2021 shortly after media reports began circulating that a “mass grave” of 215 indigenous children was found in Kamloops. McMurtry was suspended, and now almost a year later, he has officially been fired. His termination took effect Feb. 21.
McMurtry has a masters degree in history of education and wrote his thesis on indigenous education policy. When the Kamloops announcement was made, McMurtry read through the government’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission report to update his knowledge and see what may have been behind the deaths.
The report says about 48 percent of residential school deaths for which the cause is known were due to tuberculosis. Most of the rest were due to influenza, pneumonia, other illnesses.
A student in the class McMurtry was supply teaching at the time said the children in Kamloops were tortured by priests and left out in the snow to die, McMurtry said. He hadn’t seen evidence that was true, he told The Epoch Times.
He said to the student that there were things about residential schools that were not good. He also said the majority of deaths were due to illness.
While media at the time reported that the “grave” contained precisely 215 children with some “as young as three” and other details, McMurtry and others have since said there’s no evidence that it’s even a grave.
The site in Kamloops hasn’t been exhumed and the main evidence is a radar gun detection of ground disturbances, McMurtry said. There’s nothing as precise even as childrens’ bodies, he said.
“I’m not defending schools,” McMurtry said. “All I’m saying is that, we live in a society where there’s jurisprudence, where there’s empiricism. … If you’re going to say something, you got to back it up.”
Board’s Decision McMurtry said that even if he was wrong about the residential school deaths, he doesn’t agree with how he was treated at the end of a 40-year teaching career.
“It was absolutely horrifying that they would do this to a senior teacher at the end of my career for doing something that I’m an authority on,” he said. “But even if I wasn’t, even if I said the wrong thing, that’s no way to treat a teacher.”
The Abbotsford School District did not reply to The Epoch Times inquiry as of publication. In portions of the board’s disciplinary investigation documents McMurtry posted on Twitter, his comments on the residential schools are called “inflammatory, inappropriate and insensitive.”
“Regardless of his intent he left students with the impression some or all of the deaths could be contributed [sic] to ‘natural causes’ and that the deaths could not be called murder or cultural genocide,” the documents said. His comments were “contrary to the school’s message of condolences and reconciliation.”
The board said McMurtry contravened his duty of loyalty to his employer in talking to school trustees and others about the disciplinary investigation. McMurtry said “Why would I show loyalty to people who are ending my career?” He also said he had never signed any confidentiality agreement with them.
In a Feb. 23 letter the board sent him outlining the reasons he was fired, it brought up incidents prior to the comments about residential schools.
“You made inappropriate sexualized comments to students; you exercised poor judgment by making imprudent comments to a certain student with whom you did not have a positive relationship; you failed to follow COVID-19 protocols,” were some of the other factors the board said it took into consideration in its decision to fire him.
McMurtry said regarding the earlier incidents that he had already settled that with the board. “I can’t talk about that … because it’s settled,” he said.
An older interview with the National Post gave an example of the “sexualized” comments. He was once discussing the history of the Olympics with his class and said ancient Greeks competed naked, “Sort of like women’s beach volleyball today.”
For decades, McMurtry said, he taught at various schools and served as a principal and never had problems with his employers. It was when he started with the Abbotsford School District a few years ago that problems started.
When asked why he thinks that’s so, he said “what’s happening is cancel culture. So in schools, teachers are walking on eggshells.”

Twitter accounts used by the Canadian government have been caught in the U.S. government dragnet attempting to counter online disinformation, a recent iteration of the so-called Twitter Files released by journalist Matt Taibbi reveals.
Taibbi published a new thread on Jan. 3 which provides further details on how the U.S. government and its agencies interacted with Twitter to pursue its agenda. Internal company files are being released since Elon Musk took over in late October.
Taibbi’s latest thread is labelled “Twitter and the FBI ‘Belly Button,’” in reference to the bureau asking Twitter whether it should be the main point of contact between “industry partners” and the U.S. government (USG).
The mention of a Canadian link was in relation to a campaign by the U.S. State Department’s Global Engagement Center (GEC) to counter Chinese propaganda.
The stated mission of the GEC is to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation that runs counter to U.S. interests.
“When the State Department/GEC – remember this was 2020, during the Trump administration – wanted to publicize a list of 5,500 accounts it claimed would ‘amplify Chinese propaganda and disinformation’ about COVID, Twitter analysts were beside themselves,” wrote Taibbi.
“The GEC report appeared based on DHS [Department of Homeland Security] data circulated earlier that week, and included accounts that followed ‘two or more’ Chinese diplomatic accounts. They reportedly ended up with a list ‘nearly 250,000’ names long, and included Canadian officials and a CNN account.”
Taibbi provided screenshots of purported internal conversations of Twitter staff related to the GEC request.
Senior legal executive Stacia Cardille sent an email to policy director Nick Pickles on May 7, 2020, providing “transmittal information” from the State Department.
“We are providing these 5,500 accounts that display inorganic behavior and follow two or more of the 36 Chinese diplomatic twitter accounts that we have identified in the report,” reads the message.
“Due to the fact that these accounts follow two or more of these diplomatic accounts, and a good portion of them are newly created, we believe they are suspicious.”
The State Department did not request any action to be taken on those accounts and said the information was being shared for “situational awareness.”
Previous iterations of the Twitter Files have shown U.S. government agencies requested the social media company take action against accounts sharing information on COVID-19 which diverges from the U.S. government’s view or that related to the elections, with ensuing censorship in many cases.
Later on May 7, 2020, Pickles commented in an email to an unidentified interlocutor on the GEC request.
“I am assuming that the policy/comms folks on their side [USG] haven’t reviewed the list line by line, so curious how they’d react if told their analytics colleagues had included the Canadian military and CNN…” he wrote.
Twitter Pushback The day after receiving the information from the State Department, Twitter was pushing back in the media on the claims that its platform was being used to spread Chinese disinformation.
CNN reported Twitter as saying that an initial review of the over 5,000 accounts did not support the government’s claims and that many accounts belonged to “government entities, nongovernmental organizations, and journalists.”
“The GEC provided Twitter with a small sample of the overall dataset that included nearly 250,000 accounts,” a State Department spokesperson told CNN, adding that it’s “not surprising that there are authentic accounts in any sample.”
“Our overall analysis is based on a confluence of factors that drive our assessment, which we stand by.”
Then Twitter head of safety Yoel Roth commented in an email to colleagues on May 6, 2020, that the GEC “blitz” on the issue was “at least in part an attempt to insert themselves into the conversations we’ve had with DHS, FBI, ODNI [Office of the Director of National Intelligence], and others.”
A month later, Roth emailed Cardille and others saying that Twitter, Facebook, and Google found the involvement of the GEC in a meeting between industry and government on election security problematic.
He said this was in part because of the GEC’s “mandate for offensive IO [information operations] to promote American interests” and their sharing of reports “based on shaky methodology.”
Taibbi’s thread also highlighted the GEC’s attempt to counter Russian disinformation, noting a report it released in February 2020.
“The GEC flagged accounts as ‘Russian personas and proxies’ based on criteria like, ‘Describing the Coronavirus as an engineered bioweapon,’ blaming ‘research conducted at the Wuhan institute,’ and ‘attributing the appearance of the virus to the CIA,’” he wrote.
Taibbi said this report “still led directly” to some media picking up the story.

Public Health Canada to Collect Online Data to Target the Vaccine Hesitant
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has announced a contract with a social media intelligence collection firm based in the U.K. to obtain data on vaccine hesitant individuals in order to be able to deliver targeted messaging to break through their hesitancy, contract details indicate.
“In preparation for increased vaccination education, promotion, and outreach, The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is requiring the services of a consultant to analyze the vaccine related conversations on social media and PHAC social media initiative and campaign performance,” says the tender notice description posted online on Dec. 22.
The notice says the contract will be awarded to U.K.-based Pulsar Platform if no other supplier submits a bid meeting the requirements before the closing date. The estimated value of the contract is $339,000.
Pulsar describes itself as an “audience intelligence company” using artificial intelligence and “smart human minds” to comb through conversational and behavioural data on social media.
The notice says the consultant will need to analyze Twitter and other online sites and platforms spanning three years of historical data.
PHAC is seeking to obtain information on individuals who are participating in and influencing online conversations about vaccination.
It wants reports produced by the consultant to “provide PHAC an actionable understanding of the vaccine conversation landscape online and the conversation participants, while determining a conversation baseline,” according to the Statement of Work.
Once this data is obtained, PHAC will run a tailored messaging campaign, which it says will seek to target “communities of interest,” such as “indigenous peoples and millennial males,” states the Advance Contract Award Notice.
The study is to be rerun within a three to four month period to “monitor shifts in attitudes and confidence levels,” says the notice.
‘Keyword-Based’ PHAC lays out how the consultant must conduct its work, including the establishment of a “keyword-based social listening tracker to capture social media conversations around vaccinations in Canada.”
Data must also be parsed along conversation themes such as “experiences with long Covid, previous vaccine side effects, engaging with mis/disinformation, shift in perceived risk of infection.”
PHAC also seeks to obtain a breakdown of reasons for vaccine hesitancy for different regions and cities to allow more targeted messaging.
Along with identifying regions, cities, and subgroups such as First Nations communities, PHAC is also requesting segmentations of key audiences to include “demographics, interests, affinities, online behaviours, and the leading topics of vaccine hesitancy conversation, per each sub-community.”
The Statement of Work provides an example of what the consultant should do once a sub-community has been identified.
It says that once a community of “Toronto University Students that indicate low confidence in vaccinations” has been identified, then some factors should be investigated.
These include their reasons for being hesitant and the topics of their conversations, the media they consume and the content they share, and the tone they use when discussing their vaccination status.
The Epoch Times contacted PHAC to find out if previous such programs have been implemented and to learn more about how the data from private individuals will be protected, exploited, and if it will be shared with other departments.
PHAC was also asked whether it consulted the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) on the program. A response was not obtained before publication time.
The OPC was also contacted to know whether it was aware of PHAC’s social media collection program, but a response was not received immediately.
Cellphone Tracking PHAC has been embroiled in a data collection-related controversy in recent months when it was revealed it was analyzing the anonymized movement of millions of Canadians through the tracking of their cellphones, unbeknownst to them.
PHAC had been obtaining the data from carrier Telus and other cellphone tracking companies, but in December 2021 it sought a contractor to directly access data from cellphone towers to conduct its analysis.
The data has been used to measure the compliance of Canadians while provinces implemented COVID-19 lockdowns.
When this became known, MPs started examining the issue and the Commons ethics committee told the government last spring that Canadians should be allowed to opt out of the data collection program.
The OPC also said it was investigating the matter, but the results have yet to be announced.
PHAC and the OPC have been asked about the status of the contract and the investigation.

With the pandemic eliminating jobs and work hours, the threat or reality of homelessness is hitting more and more people each day. Affordable housing was already an issue, but now it has become even more urgent to provide options for the growing number of Toronto residents who simply cannot afford to keep a roof over their heads. A lucky few will actually be able to do so by the end of this year, as developments, designed and reserved for low-income hopefuls pop up in a number of neighbourhoods
The problem is, that there are a few voices in each neighborhood who are loudly shouting “Not in my backyard”. The latest Facebook debate over the development of affordable housing in the east end of Toronto is only one of many. Most people (with a heart) are in full support of housing the struggling citizens of the city, but the selfish exceptions, NIMBYs, for short, tend to be the loudest. The rest of the residents are just ashamed of how the attitude of the neighborhood is being portrayed. They don’t want to be lumped in with these people who think that they are too good to live beside fellow human beings who can’t afford a house with a backyard.

Toronto residents are pushing back against plans to build a modular housing development on the lot at the corner of Trenton and Cedarvale Ave. in East York’s Stan Wadlow neighbourhood.
The NIMBYs who live near the Stan Wadlow Park development are concerned that putting housing in a local parking lot will make it impossible for people who live in, or visit, the neighbourhood to find parking. They are concerned that their precious children will be exposed to ne’er do wells, drug dealers, gang influence, violence, people suffering from addiction/mental illness, and people who are generally unstable.
“This parking lot is a hub; it’s the heart of the community”, claims one resident, about the empty pad of pavement in the background. If the parking lot isn’t there, the residents are going to be stuck using the park and community center? Instead of standing around on bland cement smoking and drinking, they could attend the neighbouring elementary school, go for a swim, or join the community baseball league? How is a parking lot the heart of the community? And, despite the statements to the contrary,
A recent Facebook post highlighted a piece on Global News in which some residents are up in arms about the city’s announcement to replace a community parking lot with affordable housing for 64 people exiting homelessness. They are protesting the development, even though the city has already approved it. The angry residents claim that there was no consultation beforehand, but this is a city parking lot. The city doesn’t require permission from the residents to move forward.
There will be a meeting, during which residents can state their case regarding the design and specifics of the plans, in hopes that they will be taken into consideration, and will be possible with the building requirements. The City says claims they didn’t have time to consult with the area residents,, as the housing funding will be lost if it’s not used by the end of the year. That means the site has to be approved, inspected and built with enough time to fill the units before the end of December.

The entertainment and writing communities were saddened to learn of the passing of Gary Webb-Procter aka ‘Gary17’, widely respected musician, critic and Editor of East York Chronicle late last year. Gary’s death didn’t just leave a hole in the hearts of his friends, family, readers and fans, it left a hole in the music scene. Gary took the spotlight off the bands we had already heard of and gave the lesser-known acts a chance to shine. Without his reviews, the Linsmore Tavern wouldn’t be a mecca for up-and-coming musicians, and we would never have heard of or from some incredible talent. The talent of the future deserves the same recognition that their predecessors gained from Gary’s pieces. Reviewing live music isn’t easy nowadays, but as vaccination rollouts continue, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We are proud to offer our services. These are big shoes to fill, but we hope we can honour Gary’s memory by doing it justice.

What is the point of paying additional fees for shipping insurance to a reputable company if they are simply going to ignore claims for lost items?
Small business owners rely upon delivery services like UPS to get products to customers in the United States. With a company as established and highly respected as UPS, it should be safe to assume that packages will get delivered to the customers, or that UPS will make good on their *clearly stated* promise to replace the value of what was lost.
A package sent to a customer was lost in October of last year. The form was filled out and necessary proof and documentation provided in order to receive the $100, only to not receive any sort of response five months later. To add insult to injury, an additional package has since gone missing. Countless people are paying for additional insurance because they think that the “free” coverage of $100 makes UPS so wonderful and generous. Considering how much was lost having to refund two customers for merchandise they never received, it’s a good thing even more money wasn’t wasted on additional insurance. The least UPS could do is respond regarding the $100 coverage they promised, but they can’t even bother to do that. If the package doesn’t qualify for the payment, that’s fine. Repeated calls to the company have been met with, “it’s being looked into”. When? RESPOND! #ThanksForDelivering #ups
Fed up and turning to Google for suggestions from other customers who may have had similar experiences revealed that small business owners all over the USA are suing UPS for having taken their ‘insurance’ money for property loss, only to discover that UPS does not actually insure the package and/ or refund the clients.
Small businesses struggle in a GOOD economy. Losing $1000 on a single order, especially more than once can make an independent company. The months following Christmas are notoriously slow already, even without the financial hit of COVID-19 affecting a large percentage of potential and repeat clientele. It’s frightening and highly disappointing to discover that we can’t rely on UPS to ship products, especially during a time when personal delivery often isn’t even an option for the few businesses who are conveniently located close to their customers. The majority of products can’t just be emailed or faxed.. Is the only hope to rely on the inexpensive and widespread use of 3D printers to safely and reliably send albums over the border? That might be an option a generation or two from now, but for now, independent entrepreneurs are stuck relying on a shipping company that doesn’t care if they go bankrupt using their service.

Ontario is reporting 2,998 cases of COVID19 and nearly 76,500 tests completed. Locally, there are 800 new cases in Toronto, 618 in Peel, 250 in York Region, 161 in Waterloo and 153 in Niagara.

There is no shortage of debate regarding the Coronavirus. Are masks really effective? Are the statistics realistic or inaccurate? Is this a virus that can be spread through the air or just through vapours? Or is it not in the air?
This is a pandemic that is affecting the entire world. Of course we’re going to talk about it and of course we’re going to disagree about it. One thing is true though. Without information and education we are never going to get rid of this thing. Without knowing what’s going on or how prevalent the virus is, we are never going to be able to flatten the curve or help prevent more unnecessary deaths.
So why is it that Facebook and Twitter are stopping us from having these discussions? If you so much as mention COVID-19 on Facebook you are immediately blocked from posting, and accused of false information. Even if you say “My grandmother died from Covid today”, they tell you it is false information. They don’t know if your grandmother was perfectly healthy, or if she had your mother when she was 16 and she’s only in her fifties now. They don’t know if she had a physical 6 months ago and passed it with flying colours. All they know is that you mentioned COVID-19 so you must be wrong.
Sharing TRULY false news isn’t particularly admirable, and can have serious consequences, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t share opinions and research. The president of the United States says false and misleading things all the time. The only time he ever gets CENSORED though, is when he mentions COVID-19. The powers-that-be that censor the internet have no problem with him saying horribly racist stuff or ‘grab her by the p****!’, but even HE is not allowed to comment on COVID-19.
None of us should automatically believe anything we read online regardless of topic. We should fact-check and we should do research before we share anything that we are unsure about. That being said, we should be allowed to share SOMETHING about COVID-19, considering how much it’s affecting our day-to-day lives!
Some of the most horrific events in human history have taken place because of a lack of information, a lack of understanding, and sheer ignorance. Yes This week the CDC quietly updated the Covid number to admit that only 6%
If you visit this link, you will find that the statistical analysis of Covid-19 death rates is pretty open to interpretation. According to the Center for Disease Control, only 6% of deaths could be directly related to COVID-19. The remainder included patients who had other underlying health conditions with an average of 2.6 conditions in addition to having contracted COVID-19. Studies have shown that COVID-19 does affect the respiratory system, but if somebody already suffers from respiratory distress, the virus is going to hit them much harder, potentially leading to further damage and, in some cases, death.
There are a number of underlying conditions listed beside the patients who were said to have died from COVID-19, including diabetes and heart problems. Having an underlying health condition increases the chances of complications and death when one contracts viruses like COVID-19, the flu, or even the common cold. While the pandemic is certainly not helping people who already suffer from health problems, this data shows that the statistics could be misleading. These people aren’t necessarily dying from the virus. If the virus didn’t exist then maybe a lot of these people could have made it another year or another decade. But we will never know that. It is a sad fact that this virus is essentially going around the globe and eliminating the weak and the sick. Natural selection at its cruelest.
As with anything Covid-related, this recent article by the Center for Disease Control has the potential to spark much debate. But, if medical professionals and disease experts want to comment or debuke claims like this, they have to be given access to this information and study it! I’m sure people have questions and opinions, but if we’re not allowed to share it, we’re never going to get the answers we want.
I was asked to write some content for a songwriter, musician. Sometimes, with music reviews and content, I’m kind of reaching, at a loss for words, simply because it’s just not my cup of tea. This is NOT one of those times. Rad Dixon’s single, “Keep All the Children Safe” has a fun and danceable old school reggae rhythm, ‘Have You Ever Been in Love’ beat, created and popularized by Dennis Brown, and the root of many a top Reggae song. The song itself, featuring DJ Teacha D for the ‘Outta Jamaica Riddim Album’ is a heartfelt, touching, powerful, poignant and relevant message.
“I write songs for the upliftment of the youth to stay away from trouble…”. And Rad Dixon manages not just to uplift the listeners, but also to raise awareness, make people think, and remind people around the world that the children are our future, and DESERVE better! When one thinks of Reggae, one can’t help but think of Bob Marley. That being said, SO FEW can even come close to his legacy when it comes to fighting cruelty and injustice in Jamaica through song. It’s HARD for me to make ANY comparison to the KING of Reggae, but I have to admit that Rad Dixon gave me a little bit of a Bob-ish tingle with this track. I caught a taste of the complication ‘Outta Jamaica Riddim Album’, and it just left me wanting more. I highly recommend checking out both the album, and Rad Dixon himself.

In it’s fifth incarnation, Startup Fashion Week 2018 was host to 11 local designers and 2 tech startups. Guests in attendance were treated to a week’s worth of buzz-worthy events such as a forum, conference, and the finale fashion show to kick it all off. – more pictures
The Media Launch Party on Tuesday was an opportunity for models, photographers, designers and more to mingle over drinks and peruse the booths to showcase various new industry-related business startups, such as e-commerce website Authentique and the networking connection app Cast Meet Crew. A few of the designers who would be showing friday, including Gigi Wang, Stacey Gonder of House of Sass and Magic, and Lulu et Gigi had models dressed in their runway garb in attendance to give the guests a sneak peak of what was to come!

Honda Indy Toronto returns to July dates at Exhibition Place
After accommodating the PanAm and ParaPan Am Games last year by racing in June, the Honda Indy Toronto will be celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary at Exhibition Place(Lakeshore Avenue Strachan) on the traditional dates again this year, July 15-17.
“Honda Indy Toronto has been a summer staple for generations of Torontonians and festival goers from across Ontario and beyond,” said Jeff Atkinson, newly-appointed President of Honda Indy Toronto. “We’re working hard on growing the festival programming to create an event that is fun, exciting for all ages, and that builds on its legacy and connects with the history of the race.”
The Verizon IndyCar Series headlines the event weekend, featuring some of racing’s best drivers including Oakville’s James Hinchcliffe, Graham Rahal, Marco Andretti and 2016 Series Champion Scott Dixon, among others.
Aspiring young drivers to the Verizon IndyCar Series will also be showcased during the Honda Indy as the entire Mazda Road to Indy ladder series will return, which includes Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.

30th Anniversary of Racing in Toronto with Honda Indy
Quo Vado Italian Contemporary Film Festival June 9, 2016
An exciting event, hosted by the Italian Contemporary Film Festival. On Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 2pm, we will be at the Italian Institute of Culture, 496 Huron St., Toronto, celebrating the upcoming International premier of hit comedy film, “Quo Vado” at the ICFF 2016 with actor/comedian Luca Medici a.k.a. Checco Zalone and Director Gennaro Nunziante. The film takes place in a small town in Italy, where government reform to cut bureaucracy creates a whole new and challenging reality for Checco, who grew up privileged, with a guaranteed job as a public servant.
In English, the title translates to “Where Am I Going?” has hit home with Italians all too familiar with precarious working conditions, and is reflective of how the economy and job security have changed over the years in Italy. Bypassing Star Wars, the film actually beat out Avatar for the top-grossing film in Italian box office history, generating well over 59 million euros.
The press conference is open for Q&A with Media Representative and general public.
Director, Gennaro Nunziante also wrote his films, and is best known for his 2013 film, “What a Beautiful Day”. Luca Medici a.k.a. Checco Zalone has starred in various Nunziante films, with both writing and composition credits, including “What a Beautiful Day” (2011), “Cado dalle nubi” (2009), and “Sole a catinelle” (2013). He became famous in 2006 thanks to the song Siamo una squadra fortissimi.
Nunziante and Zalone share the same hometown of Bari, Italy, giving them a common world from which they can be inspired and collaborate to create such ground-breaking films as “Quo Vado”. These two very talented artists obviously work very well together, and this film has put them on the map. It would be no surprise to see an increase in the popularity of their previous projects. Even more exciting will be to see what they come up with next!

The thickness and quality of the vinyl is imperative when it comes to a good quality vinyl lp. In the early 70’s, as a cost cutting move, much of the music industry began reducing both the thickness and the quality of record vinyl. Marketed by RCA Victor as the Dynaflex (125g) process, it was considered inferior by most collectors. Something to keep in mind when shopping for older recordings, but likely unavoidable in a lot of cases. Most vinyl records are pressed from a mixture of 70/30% virgin to recycled vinyl. New or “virgin” heavy/heavyweight (180-220g) vinyl is commonly used modern audiophile vinyl releases. Many collectors prefer heavyweight vinyl albums for their superior sound because of their higher tolerance against deformation from normal wear and tear.
Vinyl Record Care and Maintenance
Dust, oil and dirt not only takes away from the sound, playing a dirty vinyl LP actually damages the playing surface, so keeping your vinyl record collection clean is very important. Many commercial products contain isopropyl alcohol and shouldn’t- despite the nice shiny result, the alcohol actually strips the protective coating and leaves the vinyl LP vulnerable to damage and the sound brittle and grainy. Your best bet is a device specifically designed for cleaning- some are quite inexpensive, or a non-abrasive microfiber cloth in a pinch. Some people recommend dish soap, but the reviews on that vary, and rinsing with water is difficult without damaging the label. Handle them at the edges and make sure you center them before putting them on the turntable so they don’t get damaged. Aside from that, sit back and enjoy the tunes!

So with a good picture, knowledge of SEO, one guy with a camera can place an event on the first page of Google. Same picture can be found with hashtags on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Because, the second most popular place to find that event is Facebook. So using the same knowledge of SEO we can place an event on all social media.
The next factor that controls success is the number of times an event or website is listed on Google. Google lists the mentions on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and web sites. So would you rather be list on 40 websites or 4 million. The more hits, the better chance of your info getting into the customers phone.

retweeted and or re-posted by a user with more fans. Because what they want is “media”. Give me a pic of Brad Pitt with correct hashtags and i will reach millions. And if i have 10,000 followers and your media is an old dead dog — your response rate will be lower

Do you like battles? How about an art battle? Watching 12 artists painting live in front of the crowd is more exciting that it may sound. Visitors of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair had the opportunity to see that for themselves on Nov. 10. Jieun Kim, a medical student of the University of Toronto, said it was her second time taking part in an art battle. As a self-taught artist, Jieun Kim just loves painting. “It feels really good because I do it for stress relief,” she commented. “It also helps me express all the feelings I have inside me.” She also wants to break the stereotype about boring doctors and might succeed. Being able to draw an actual picture in 20 minutes in front of dozens of people definitely does not sound as a boring pastime.
Going back to more typical kind of battles, the Horse Show is happening Nov. 10-14. Voted Top Ten Horse Shows in North America in 2014, its signature is the competition for International Show Jumpers. Longines FEI World Cup, one of the most attended events, according to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair official website, is a must-see event. Both competitions would be exciting for newbies as well as for long-time fans.

May 12, 2015, TORONTO — The Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF) unveils its 2015 program today at The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Toronto. The annual festival celebrates the best in contemporary Italian cinema from around the world. ICFF runs from June 11-19, 2015 in Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga, Hamilton, Montreal and Quebec City.
“The ICFF slate is a diverse collection of new and returning voices all linked by Italian culture,” says Artistic Director Cristiano de Florentiis. “This year’s films take a creative and multicultural approach to current events and contemporary issues. We’re also excited to shine a spotlight on features and shorts by Italian Canadian filmmakers.”
The festival opens with a gala at Roy Thomson Hall and closes with a celebration at The Ritz- Carlton hotel. ICFF’s opening film is the international premiere of the drama L’Oriana, starring Vittoria Puccini as famed journalist Oriana Fallaci. At 17, Fallaci risked her life as part of the anti-fascist resistance movement Giosfizia e Liberia and continued to raise controversy by fighting Islamic extremism into her 70s.
The festival closes with the comedy Sei mai stata sulla luna? by Paolo Genovese on June 19 at the TIFF Bell Lightbox at 7:30 p.m. Italy’s Sabrina lmpacciatore (T/›e Passion of the Christ, The Last Miss) will present the film.
ICFF 2015 includes more than 19 premieres, a pre-festival retrospective of Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi, co-presented with TIFF and in collaboration with the U of T, as well as the children’s festival, ICFF Junior, which is presenting the Canadian premiere of the Italian- Canadian co-production (Midnight Sun), starring Dakota Goyo and Bridget Moynahan and directed by Roger Spottiswoode and Brando Quilici. All foreign language films are subtitled.
The second annual ICFF Industry Day, an event organized in collaboration with myETV Media, Pinewood Studios and SIRT Sheridan, facilitates connections between Italian and Canadian film industries. This year the event focuses on animated films.

THE SHOW Odysseo: Larger Than Life The horse has marked human history and progress more than any other animal. Horses have taken us to the ends of the earth, enabled us to build bridges between cultures and expand civilization. It is the beauty and harmony of this ancient relationship, this meeting of two worlds – those of horse and man – that inspired the creators of Cavalia’s second show, Odysseo. As friends, partners and inseparable performers on stage, 70 horses and 45 artists lead the viewer on a great journey in yet another world – a world of dreams – where, together, they discover some of the planet’s most unforgettable landscapes.
With this new creation, Cavalia marries the equestrian arts, stage arts and high-tech theatrical effects at never-before-seen levels. A veritable revolution in live performance, Odysseo comprises a list of superlatives: the world’s largest touring big top, the biggest stage, the most beautiful visual effects, and the greatest number of horses at liberty.
The creators of this new ode to the horse made the decision to indulge their wildest artistic ambitions. Their gamble paid off: Odysseo pushes the limits of live entertainment by creating a larger-than-life show that sends hearts racing, but it is also a feast for the eyes that succeeds in delivering the spectacular with soul.
Scenography and Visual effects
To give life to this extraordinary equestrian adventure, Cavalia created a 1,626 square metres stage, in the middle of which rise two hills each three storeys tall. Some 10,000 tons of rock, earth and sand are trucked in and then sculpted to create the vast space of freedom where humans and horses come to play in complicity.
Above the stage hangs an imposing technical grid capable of supporting 80 tons of equipment including, a full-sized merry-go-round, far beyond anything attempted to date on any touring show and comparable to the best-equipped theaters of Las Vegas, London or New York.
Odysseo is a show unlike any other on the planet. This unique theatrical production is a grandiose multi-dimensional show. Spectators are taken to a live Hollywood-style movie set while the touching interactions between human and horse are at the heart of the action. Layers of mesmerizing decors combined with gravity-defying acrobatic and areal stunts and the staggering effects created by state-of-the-art scenery makes this humongous stage a feast for the eyes. To enhance this breathtaking experience, the production presents a splendid voyage with extremely high-definition computer graphic images, transporting the audience across the world’s most beautiful landscapes. To project these breathtaking graphic backdrops on an immense cyclorama the size of three IMAX screens, Odysseo uses projectors as powerful as those illuminating the grandest movie theaters. But whereas a cinema has only one projector, Odysseo uses 18 simultaneously. This live multi-dimensional voyage is a veritable revolution in live entertainment production.
A world of dreams and fantasies
The dream begins in a misty, enchanted forest where horses graze and frolic under a sky of rolling clouds and a setting sun. Horses, riders, acrobats and musicians embark on a soulful journey that leads them from the Mongolian steppes to Monument Valley, from the African savannah to Nordic glaciers, from the Sahara to Easter Island.
Throughout this grand voyage, spectators discover urban stilters and applaud the prowess of a troupe of African acrobats. Viewers are mesmerized by horses powering angelic aerialists in a four-person silks act that takes them into the skies. To the sound of an African harp called a Kora, audiences witness the beauty of 15 horses lying on sand dunes awaken. They will likewise appreciate the beautiful liberty number, uniting purebred Arabian horses directed by inaudible vocal commands from their kneeling trainer.
The scenes follow the seasons and their attendant wonders. At times, the horses and people in this fabulous caravan become too numerous to count.
The Odysseo epic wraps up with a fantastic crescendo as the stage is inundated with 300,000 litres of water in just a few minutes. A vertiginous virtual waterfall overhangs the resulting lake, in which horses, riders and artists join to frolic, leaving behind them the traces of their splashes and an astonished audience.
A show that feeds the soul
Although the audacity, inventiveness and monumental scope of Cavalia’s new creation may boggle the mind, the essence of this magnificent equestrian odyssey lies elsewhere. Beyond the impressive technical display and equestrian and acrobatic numbers that are unlike anything ever seen on stage, Odysseo is first and foremost a work that feeds the soul. In these difficult, troubled times, Odysseo offers up something gentle, even tender. The poetry flowing from this grand adventure shines a light on a more humane world where human and horse may live in harmony. For just a few hours, the spectator sets off to discover new horizons, the limits of his imagination, and gets to experience a waking dream in a world where beauty, serenity and hope reign.
CAVALIA’S ODYSSEO WHITE BIG TOP
Standing 38 meters tall, the White Big Top is a traffic-stopping addition to the skyline of each city Odysseo performs. When visitors enter, they are immediately transported into a lavish and intimate environment reminiscent of any permanent theatre.
Following the instant success of the first Cavalia show in 2003, Latourelle began to dream of how to break through the limitations of a big top tent. The biggest challenge was to open up the performance area. Latourelle knew that such unprecedented flexibility would allow him to showcase more horses and acrobats to create mind-boggling scenes. This involved removing supporting masts from the stage, a common staging issue in tent shows. A specially-designed big top was created in Europe, where the weight of the structure shifted from masts to three arches above the tent. The Italian firm Canobbio, in collaboration with Artistic Director Normand Latourelle, designed the tent and supervised construction. Asteo of France and Genivar of Canada supervised engineering operations. The arches that support the massive structure were built by Show Canada.
More than twice the size of the structure created for Cavalia’s original production, the White Big Top is the size of two NFL football fields. The 1,626 square metres stage, larger than a hockey rink and the 15 meters wide backstage area offer a vast playground for more than 30 cantering horses. The grandiose stage also offers incredible possibilities for large-scale staging.
A total of five tents comprise the Odysseo village. The White Big Top houses the stage and backstage, seating and lobby areas under a single roof. A Rendez-Vous tent hosts VIP ticket holders for dinner, an open bar and photo opportunities with the artists. This package includes a private tour of the stables and the best seats in the house. The horses live in a climatecontrolled stable tent complete with showers, tack shop and a blacksmith department. Between the stables and White Big Top, the Warm-Up tent is where the riders rehearse with the horses before and after the show. This area also includes wardrobe, makeup and dressing areas for the two-legged artists. A staff kitchen tent prepares more than 600 meals daily.
FUN FACTS
Odysseo features 70 horses of 14 different breeds including the Appaloosa, Arabian, Canadian, Criollo, Holsteiner, Lusitano, Oldenburg, Paint Horse, Percheron, Quarter Horse, Selle français, Purebred (P.R.E.), Warmblood and Lipizzan.
The horses are from Spain, Portugal, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Australia, The United States and Canada.
There are 45 artists – riders, acrobats, aerialists, dancers and musicians.
The artists are from around the world including the United States, Canada, Brazil, France, Belgium, Guinea, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, Japan and Poland.
There are 350 costumes and 100 pairs of shoes and boots in the show. Artists may have up to seven different costumes.
An artist may have no more than 30 seconds to do a quick costume change between numbers.
A team of 13 dressmakers, one property master, one designer and one shoemaker worked in the Cavalia studios to create the costumes.
Materials used in the costumes include linen, silk, cotton, leather and some imitation fur. The use of natural fibers gives the clothes sheen and lets them fall in a way that synthetic fibers simply cannot match.
The costumes are adapted to the artists’ needs, especially those of the acrobats and riders, to facilitate their onstage movement while not compromising their appearance.
The on-tour costume department consists of one wardrobe person and three dressers who launders, mends and cares for the costumes. At times during the show, they juggle 15 simultaneous wardrobe changes. They have two sewing machines, one shoe-repair machine and one overlock machine.

Heat Fest 2015 brings comfort food to Toronto on Monday, February 16
TORONTO, Feb 13, 2015 – On Monday, February 16, 2015, the ‘who’s-who’ of food trucks will celebrate Toronto’s first Heat Fest- A Great Canadian Comfort Food Festival. This event is to raise funds for KidzCan, a children’s charity, which supports disadvantaged children by hosting and funding healthy eating events across Toronto. Sponsored by The Distillery Group, Mavi Travel and Tours and Marty Galin, the highly anticipated family day event will be held at the Historic Distillery District, which will become a winter gathering of some of the city’s most delicious food truck’s, ‘Heatfest Specials” and fitness activities to help families stay warm. The event will begin with Sugar Hoops, followed by Jazz Funk with Gillian Bartoluccia, before moving onto Latin Dance Mix, Yoga Fitness and Creative Movements. Chef and “Spice master” Greg Couillard will be serving up some spicy Fusion Creations with the exciting new catering company Saucy Affairs alongside participating food trucks and restaurants: Mr. Corn, Wickedly Sinful, Buster’s Sea Cove, Mavi Cuisine, Marty G’s Pies, KidzCan and Shalit Food.
“This years goal is to share the enjoyment and excitement of healthy living with families across Toronto. The Caribbean Scholarship Foundation hosts a week of Caribbean delicacies and delights during Black History Month At Marché Brookfield Place Featuring: Celebrity Chef La-toya Fagon
January 25, 2015. Toronto ON – Black History Month’s Culinary Event — Spirits & Spice — takes place February 2 – February 8 at the Marché Toronto, Brookfield Place in downtown Toronto. This is a fund raising food festival for the Caribbean Scholarship Foundation and features the exotic cuisine of Caribbean Canadian chef La-toya Fagon.
This Black History Month festival is exclusive to Marché Toronto. The restaurant and the Caribbean Canadian community invites the city to enjoy the warm aromas, pulsating rhythms and spicy tastes and drinks of the islands. During Spirits & Spice, Marché will feature a selection of Caribbean dishes featuring Grace Kennedy (GK) products created by Chef La-toya Fagon alongside its usual menu items. The food is cooked right before patrons’ eyes with seasonal products from the Caribbean. The GK Grilling station featuring Grace Jerk, Rubs and Sauces is a must try for all steak and meat lovers. As well guests will find Caribbean inspired beverages and smoothies at the juice station, while, the in-restaurant bar will feature English Harbour Rum (Antigua), Carib Beer (Trinidad and Tobago) and the unique Relax Riesling and Funf 5 Riesling wine that will be paired with the island dishes. Caribbean desserts and even coffee with a Caribbean twist will be available for guest to enjoy.
Spirits & Spice week kicks off on Monday, February 2nd and ends on Sunday, February 8th. The Caribbean Scholarship Foundation (CSF) Spirits and Spice event is an annual fundraiser for the Foundation, which in December 2014 gave out $10,000 in scholarships to deserving students from the Caribbean Diaspora in Canada. Kyler Philip, Jasmine Francis, Justice Betty and Nathalee Ewers were each awarded $2,500 as part of the “Feature Leaders” Scholarship. The Future Leaders initiative is a partnership between CSF and Western Union and includes an innovative mentorship program designed to give students an added advantage in their academic pursuit. CSF is also supporting PACT as part of our 2015 community initiative. The Toronto Area based charity is dedicated to working with, supporting and empowering at-risk youth, as well as youth already in conflict with the law. Recently they have embarked on the empowerment of women in diversity communities. David Lockett is a hands-on volunteer, Co-Founder and President of the PACT Urban Peace Program, and a proud supporter of Chef Fagon a young Black woman who is making her mark as world class Chef.
Chef Fagon has been supporting PACT for the last 9 years by donating her time to teaching culinary courses. Recently with the launch of the Jean Augustine Empowerment Center, PACT cooking courses has grown with Chef Fagon teaching young women different forms of empowerment, budgeting, and nutrition. Western Union will present our Exclusive Media day which will be held on February 4 at Marche from 11:00am – 1:30pm exclusively for members of the media. Chef Fagon will do live cooking demos and attendees can taste a variety of delicacies from around the Caribbean, while sampling the region’s finest spirits beer and also some great wines. Members from CSF and PACT will be on hand to provide information about the programs and scholarship opportunities they provide.
There will be plenty of excitement on Media day and all week long with live music and giveaways. Over 30,000 patrons are expected to take part in the week long festivities, many of which will be delighted for a taste of the tropics in the heart of winter.

Iconic Recording Artist Bryan Adams To Be Honoured with Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award at Canadian Music Week 2015
Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce Bryan Adams as the 2015 recipient of the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award. The award – bestowed to the singer-songwriter in recognition of his social activism and benevolent support of humanitarian interests and causes – will be presented on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards gala in Toronto during Canadian Music Week 2015.
Alongside a music career spanning more than four decades, singer-songwriter and Canadian icon Bryan Adams has stood as an ambassador of humanitarian causes and relief. His participation in such concerts as Live Aid, Amnesty International’s “A Conspiracy of Hope” tour, Rock for Amnesty, and Live 8 has brought awareness to human rights, poverty, and famine while his advocacy of PETA and Greenpeace has supported animal rights and the protection and conservation of the environment.
Through performances on the annual Prince’s Trust Charity Concert, Farm Aid and Save The Rainforest, Adams has helped raise funds to support disadvantaged youth in the UK, assist American family farmers and preserve tropical rainforests. A social activist, he took part in Freedomfest; Rock the World for Greenpeace; Peace, Freedom and Democracy for Georgia; and helped commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall with Roger Waters’ The Wall.
With acclaimed producer David Foster and longtime songwriting partner Jim Vallance, Adams co-wrote “Tears Are Not Enough”, raising more than $3 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. In 2004, he appeared on the Canada for Asia benefit concert in Toronto in support of victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Two years later, Adams became the first western artist to perform in Pakistan, taking part in a benefit concert to raise funds and rebuild schools for those devastated by the 2005 earthquake.
Seeking a more direct channel for his philanthropic work, Adams established the Bryan Adams Foundation with an aim of improving the quality of people’s lives around the world. Since 2006, the foundation has been providing support and financial grants to projects and organizations advancing education and learning opportunities for children in need, funding medical research, training, treatment and access and much more.
“Bryan’s work – as a songwriter, composer, musician, recording artist, performer, and photographer – has touched millions of lives around the world,” said Gary Slaight. “Add to that the countless number of causes and disadvantaged struggling around the world that his foundation has directly supported, protected and enriched – it’s remarkable. My father and I couldn’t be more proud of Bryan’s benevolence, and it is our privilege to honour him with this year’s Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award.”
An internationally recognized and celebrated musician, Bryan Adams has released more than a dozen recordings, sold more than 65 million albums and garnered 21 top ten hits worldwide. His music has appeared in a number of box office films including The Guardian, Bobby, Old Dogs, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Three Musketeers, Don Juan DeMarco, and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. He has received numerous awards and nominations including multiple JUNOs, Grammys, Oscars, Golden Globes, ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards, and Academy Awards.
Adams is an inductee of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Wembley’s Square of Fame. In 2010 he received the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and was recognized with the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for his lifetime contribution to the arts in Canada. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the Order of British Columbia and has a star on both Canada and Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
Adams is also an acclaimed photographer. Amongst the books he has released are “Exposed” a collection of portraits and fashion work chronicling his photographic work to date, and “Wounded – The Legacy of War”, a collection of intimate photographs documenting the personal sacrifice of war. A photo exhibition from the “Wounded” collection is currently running at the Somerset House in London until January 2015.

The Cabbagetown BIA is proud to present the 38th annual Cabbagetown Festival of the Arts, set for September 4 – 14, highlighting live outdoor music and entertainment on Saturday September 6 and Sunday September 7. Over the two days, the festival will close down Parliament Street from Wellesley Street south to Gerrard Street East to showcase the very best of what the community has to offer. The festival officially begins Saturday at 10 a.m. and continues Sunday at 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, the festival hosts an opening ceremony at the TD Bank, on the corner of Parliament and Carlton Streets. “This years festival will see bands up and down the streets, children’s zones, artist vendors and every conceivable amusement for all ages,” says Lido Chilelli, festival programmer and co-ordinator.”

Toronto, August 7, 2014 – Scotiabank BuskerFest in support of Epilepsy Toronto returns to the Downtown Yonge neighbourhood with more than 160 of the world’s top street performers in over 70 acts. North America’s largest street performers festival, and the world’s largest epilepsy event, takes place along Yonge Street from Queen Street to College Street and surrounding areas from August 21-24.
With six Guinness world records, three World Champions and a sky high list of awards, this year’s lineup of performers at Scotiabank BuskerFest are a real bunch of over-achievers. Last year an estimated 1.5 million people attended the festival, and organizers are expecting at least as many this year who will be entertained by world-class street artists from around the globe – from Canada and the U.S., and as far away as Australia, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom – performing on 16 pitches, noon to night.
Audiences will be dazzled and charmed by acrobatics, balloon twisting, beatboxing, chainsaw juggling, fire-hula hooping, body contortion, belly dancing, tango dancing, sleight of hand, Chinese pole, Russian bar, Hungarian whip-cracking, teeterboard, cyr wheel, straight jacket escapes, skateboard stunts and much more as performers descend on the country’s most populous city for four days and nights of silliness and spectacle in support of a great cause. CTV News anchor Andria Case hosts the event and co-chairs along with John Doig, Scotiabank Chief Marketing Officer. The event aesthetic will be created by interior designers Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander of “Make Room for Living.” Scotiabank BuskerBall takes places at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens). Among the fantastic acts are absurdist clown Ale Risorio from Spain and his bag full of strange and wonderful props; Italy’s very charming ‘One-Man Band’ Lorenzo Gianmario Galli; teenage yoyo whiz Kohel Mintz and Californian break-dancers and acrobats the Flying Tortillas.
o SCOTIABANK BUSKERFEST ACCESSIBLE TO ALL Epilepsy Toronto is working to ensure all visitors enjoy the festival with ease. At the BuskerAccess Tent, located in Yonge-Dundas Square (near the festival Info Tent), visitors with disabilities are provided with assistance such as an escort to one of the accessible stages by accessibility volunteers, wearing an identifiable accessibility symbol on their shirts. Non-verbal performances happen each day throughout the festival. Ale Risorio, Ikeda Yosuke and CiRcO LoCo perform on the main stage pitches, Bence Sarkadi: The Budapest Marionettes and Woody perform at fly pitches throughout the festival grounds and BLANKO andChasseur de Rêves perform daily in Yonge-Dundas Square. Based on Franz Kafka’s short story A Report to an Academy (1917), and adapted by director Guy Sprung from the original German, Kafka’s Ape upends the notion of civilization and what it means to be human in a world of routinized inhumanity. An unnerving satire on “otherness” and the compounding growth of private military companies, Kafka’s Ape stars Howard Rosenstein as keynote speaker – and primate – Mr. Redpeter in a theatrical tour-de-force performance. Alexandra Montagnese enthrallingly plays the silent role of Mrs. Redpeter.
Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is widely celebrated as one of the most important writers of the 20th century. Written during the darkest hours of the Great War (whose centenary is being marked across the globe this summer), Kafka’s A Report to an Academy (Ein Bericht für eine Academie) is a tale of a captured simian turned into a celebrated variety show act. In Sprung’s scathing adaptation, Redpeter ends up as a distinguished member of the “private security industry,” one of the biggest growth industries of the 21st century. In place of the “report to an academy” of early 20th century scientists, Sprung presents “a keynote address” to the shareholders of a fictitious private military corporation, Graywater.
After his capture in the African jungle, the ape Redpeter realizes his only escape route is to become a walking, talking, spitting, hard-drinking member of the “Peace Industry,” the entrepreneurial world of mercenary soldiers. In his keynote address to Graywater’s annual general meeting detailing the journey of his enforced evolution from Apehood to Humanhood, Mr. Redpeter embodies the irony that he is perhaps now more animalistic and less human than he ever was as a “lower” primate. “I deliberately don’t use the word ‘freedom’. ‘Freedom’ is a powerfully seductive word which your so-called civilized world uses very cleverly, very effectively, to entrap and occupy whole continents.” – Redpeter
Kafka’s central thesis in his satire on forced assimilation – that other animals have a dignity and a respect for Mother Nature and their own species that Homo sapiens have lost – has been nudged into the 21st century. “When Kafka first wrote this short story, millions of human beings were coerced into an orgy of killing each other, proving Homo sapiens to be vastly superior to gorillas and chimpanzees when it came to mass murder and genocide. Ironically, one of the largest of the private military corporations doing business with the American government today is called Academi, formerly known as Blackwater. In a sense, it still is a report to an Academy. Was Kafka able to see into the future?” queries Sprung. The 9th annual CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF), returns to Toronto beginningSeptember 3 –13 with special community screenings on July 26 and August 30th. The festival showcases Caribbean films from 15 selected countries around the region with public, community and online screenings. This includes 10-feature length and 20 short films in competition for the CTFF Audience Prize, which will be announced on closing night – September 13. It will include an intensive four-day Market Incubator program as well as various networking sessions.
“As we continually grow in capacity and impact, the Canadian arm of CaribbeanTales is proud to present our flagship event for the ninth consecutive year” says founder and filmmaker Frances-Anne Solomon. Presently, she is directing her attention working internationally with CTFF and its companies to educate, produce, distribute, markets and exhibits Caribbean-themed films and events for audiences everywhere.
This year’s event welcomes Malinda Francis as the new CTFF director. One of her main goals is to build community partnerships to bring access of Caribbean film throughout Toronto. The festival launches this summer with two special community screenings on July 26 and August 30. “This summer we have formed a new relationship with Scotiabank Toronto Kiddie Carnival with carnival-themed films and we continue to work with West Side Arts Hub in the North End of the city,” said Francis.
This year’s festival aims to embody Caribbean culture through the lens of filmmakers. CTFF Programming Committee member, filmmaker and Trinidad & Tobago native, Christopher Pinheiro, describes Caribbean film as “channeling our inner story-tellers into film, video and new media to re-vision old and new tales of the Caribbean for worldwide audiences.”
The fest kicks off with a delicious Caribbean reception on Tuesday September3, in association with theConsulate General ofthe Republic of Trinidad & Tobago in Toronto at the Royal Cinema, 608 College Street. The evening will include the World Premiere of The Glamour Boyz Again! Sparrow (Geoffrey Dunn, Trinidad and Tobago, 2014, English, PG). The feature-length documentary reveals a remarkable acoustic performance by two of Calypso’s most venerated figures, the Mighty Sparrow and Lord Superior, which was filmed during the production of Calypso Dreams in 2002 on the rooftop of the Hilton Hotel overlooking Port of Spain. The film will include reminiscences by both Sparrow and Superior, whose friendship dates back more than 55 years, to the mid-1950s. Sparrow’s execution at the Hilton is arguably his best-rendered acoustic performance ever recorded. The session will be intercut with previously recorded interviews of Sparrow and Superior at separate venues.
From September 4 – 7, the festival hosts the Market Incubator, which gives selected filmmakers an opportunity to hone their creative and business skills, through workshops and one‐on‐one mentoring by world-class specialists. It will culminate in a pitching session in front of international funders and buyers at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The fest also organizes a number of intimate events at the University of Toronto with many opportunities to network informally with international industry players.
Festival screenings run from September 8, 10, 12 & 13 at The Royal Cinema, 608 College Street. The films will screen Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Saturday at 3:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 9:30 p.m.
